Nocturnal Owlet

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Over the past week and a half we have been attempting re-program Rylee's sleeping pattern. She was beginning to act like one of her Mama's favourite things, an owl, but as much as I love owls I do not want child up all night. Her normal routine was looking a little something like this:

9pm bedtime
1am feed
4am feed
7am feed
8:30am wake-up

Getting up three times throughout the night was beginning to wear on us. We were short-tempered, irritable, and exhausted all the time. Clearly something had to change or else we were going to go batty and fall apart.

We decided its time for her to get used to her own room and crib (mainly because she's too mobile for her bassinet, it was a head injury waiting to happen), and our other major decision was that it was time for her to cut down on her nightly feedings and learn to sleep for longer periods of time.

The first night she fought to go to sleep for about 3 hours, it was like she knew something different was happening. A couple times we tried letting her cry it out, but she never settled down. I eventually brought her out and rocked her to sleep, finally, and wrapped her up as snug as a bug in a rug in her own bed!  She slept for about 4 hours till 2:30am, and she went back down without a feed, but she woke up a couple more times before the rooster crowed. No night-time feeding was a success, but sleeping was not!

The second night she went down easy-peasy! And she went through the night again with no feedings, and she slept the whole night in her bed apart from stirring twice and all we had to do was put her soother in. It was amazing, sleep is an amazing thing and I appreciate it way more now being a parent.

The third night she slept 8.5 hours with no feeding, but we did have to re-locate her into our bed.

I really thought it was going to be a struggle but as the nights have progressed she has been great and never ceases to amaze me. We only had one rough night and now I'm kicking myself that we didn't do this earlier. Her new night-time routine now looks like this:

8:30pm: Feed & Bedtime
4:30am: Move into Mommy & Daddy's bed
6:30/7am: Feed
8am: Wake-Up
